Hiking the Best of the Six Foot Track with Diamonds
by Debra H
Recently, I had the chance for a weekend overnight hike with Diamonds in the Rough Adventures. I've done several trips with DITRA, and once again, they didn't disappoint.
Our meeting spot was on Cliff Road Katoomba, Devils Hole, where we would exit the following afternoon. We were set to meet at 8 am for an 8:30 am departure. DITRA trainers and members are always well organized and prepared. We left right on time after a quick briefing.
We descended Nellies Glen, enjoying the beautiful scenery. Walking across the Megalong Valley provided lots of points of interest, including remains of a historic village and a winery. Crossing the Megalong Valley also meant passing through some private properties, part of the Six Foot Track. It was a perfect day.
With trainers Clare and Kalina checking in constantly and Diamonds members looking out for each other, the atmosphere was great. Everyone's walking speeds were accommodated, and we regrouped at regular intervals. Clare and Kalina made sure we knew when and where we would stop for meal breaks.
The swing bridge to the Ecolodge was closed, so we had to cross the river on log bridges. With great supervision and care from Clare and Kalina, all members handled it well.
Once at the Ecolodge, it was time to relax. DITRA members always socialize well, making for an enjoyable evening. The accommodation was cozy, and the food was hearty.
After a good night's sleep, it was time to make our way back. The river crossing was made more challenging by overnight rain, but trainers and members helped each other navigate the slippery rocks.
We retraced our steps along the track, with one change: we would exit via Devils Hole. Everyone knew this was the more challenging route, but we welcomed the challenge. Devils Hole is a 500-meter steep ascent with a rock scramble at the end.
Despite the mud and slippery rocks, it was wonderful to see Clare and Kalina's leadership helping us tackle the climb. All members assisted each other and embraced the challenge.
When we reached the road and our cars, everyone felt a sense of exhilaration at what they had achieved..
Apart from the fantastic hike and weekend adventure, it was great to experience Diamonds' generosity and care. Members offered car rides home, Kalina provided foot care at the Ecolodge, and another member took portraits of each member.
The Six Foot Track is not to be missed, and doing it with Diamonds is even better!
